What is Kendo?
Kendō [ kendoː ] ( Japanese剣道, ken sword and dō way or manner) is a modified, modern form of the original Japanese sword fighting ( Kenjutsu , i.e. sword art) as learned and practiced by the samurai . Kendō as a way not only pursues the techniques and tactics of sword fighting, but also the spiritual education of people. Through Kendō, practitioners should above all attain strength of character, determination and moral strength.

Kendo is one of – if not the – classic Budo discipline and literally means “sword way”. Ken is the Japanese word for sword. The term Do (Japanese form of the Chinese “Tao”) can be interpreted as “way of life” and indicates that patient, tireless practice is not only about physical and technical development, but also about perfecting character traits.
The aim of Kendo is to promote attention, endurance, resilience and skill, as well as decisiveness, concentration and reaction ability, as well as self-discipline, responsibility, team spirit and, above all, fairness.

A good opportunity to experience Kendo live is of course to watch fights at a tournament. Every spring we organize the Basilisk Cup - since 2009 it has been a two-day event and since 2013 also for juniors - and we always look forward to many participants and also many spectators!
